Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva will leave the club at the end of the season, assistant manager Pep Lijnders confirmed on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Portugal international is set to depart as a free agent when his contract expires, bringing an end to a highly successful nine-year spell at the Etihad Stadium. During his time with City, Silva lifted six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

“Every good story comes to an end,” Lijnders said after City’s 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool. “I hope he enjoys these final weeks — there are only six left — and gets the farewell he deserves.”

Pep Guardiola, who was serving a touchline suspension during the match, has previously labelled Bernardo Silva as “irreplaceable.”

Silva joined Manchester City from AS Monaco in 2017 for a reported fee of around £43.5 million. Since then, he has made 450 appearances, establishing himself as a vital figure in Guardiola’s system thanks to his versatility, technical quality, and relentless work rate.

Following their League Cup triumph last month, City are still chasing a domestic treble as the 2025/26 season heads into its closing stages. Despite sitting nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, the Manchester side have a game in hand and eight fixtures remaining to close the gap.
