Luxol hit seven past holders Rabat Ajax as Veterans’ League returns

The David Cluett Memorial Cup made a lively return as veterans’ football resumed following the summer break, with Luxol St Andrew’s marking their comeback in emphatic fashion by thrashing cup holders Rabat Ajax 7–1.
Luxol were dominant throughout the encounter, with Matthew Schembri netting a brace. Glenn Bonello, Nenad Stankic, Tyron Borg, Leighton Grech, and Nazzareno Abela also got their names on the scoresheet. Rabat’s consolation came from Leandros Calleja.

Elsewhere, Gżira United and MFPA produced a thrilling 4–4 draw. Despite MFPA leading 4–2 midway through the second half, the Maroons fought back to earn a point. New signing Romeu Romao struck twice for Gżira, with Zvezdan Vukovic and Kevin Sammut also on target. MFPA’s scorers were Mark Barbara, who grabbed a brace, along with Stanimir Miloskovic and George Frendo.

Floriana began their campaign on a high note, cruising to a 6–2 win over Hibernians. Manolito Micallef starred with a hat-trick, while Michael Borg Olivier’s own goal and further strikes from Dylan Grima and Bojan Kaljevic sealed the victory. Hibernians replied through Glanville Goodlip and Ilia Nazarov.

In another entertaining fixture, Birkirkara St Helen’s overcame Żurrieq Wolves 6–3. Firas Aboulezz led the charge with four goals, while Mark Gauci and Dylan Zarb completed the tally for the Stripes. Żurrieq found the net through Kevin Vella, Bjorn Bondin, and Ahmed Trabelsi.

The opening weekend of the David Cluett Memorial Cup provided plenty of goals and excitement, setting the tone for another competitive veterans’ football season.
