Luis Enrique urges PSG to elevate performance ahead of Champions League last 16 clash

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique acknowledged that his side still has significant work to do after scraping past AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, setting up a last-16 clash against either FC Barcelona or Chelsea FC.
“We had the toughest draw in the league phase, and we are used to playing games like these against anyone,” Luis Enrique said following PSG’s 2-2 draw in the all-French knockout play-off tie, which saw them advance 5-4 on aggregate.
PSG had a 3-2 advantage from last week’s first leg, but Maghnes Akliouche put Monaco ahead on the night at the Parc des Princes, leveling the aggregate score.
The sending-off of Mamadou Coulibaly early in the second half gave PSG the opening they needed. Marquinhos equalized before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put the hosts 2-1 up on the night. Despite being a man down, Monaco struck again through Jordan Teze, and Wout Faes squandered a golden opportunity to force extra time.
“Of course we can and want to improve, but there is also always an opponent and we knew how difficult it would be,” Luis Enrique said. “The next one will be easier, no? Chelsea or Barça — not bad. But if any team is ready, it is us.”
PSG currently lead Ligue 1 and remain in contention to defend their Champions League title, which they claimed for the first time last season. They have also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and French Champions Trophy this campaign — all via penalty shootouts.
However, the club still appears a distance from the dominant form they showed in the latter half of last season, when they dismantled their continental rivals, culminating in a 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Munich.
“We knew how difficult it would be and we were not surprised by Monaco,” Luis Enrique added. “We showed our resilience and our ability to overcome problems, but this competition is difficult. It is important to improve and that is what we will try to do.”
The manager also hopes to get last season’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé fully fit. The 28-year-old scored 35 goals last season but has managed just 11 this campaign, starting only 14 of 38 games.
PSG will discover on Friday the identity of their next Champions League opponent in the last 16. They previously beat Barcelona 2-1 away in the group stage and have faced the Catalans in five knockout ties since 2013. Meanwhile, they have met Chelsea in three consecutive knockout ties from 2014 to 2016 and were defeated 3-0 by the Blues in last year’s Club World Cup final.
When asked how PSG can return to last year’s level, Luis Enrique said: “Just keep doing the same things. We are ready to play any opponents in any competition. We have had a lot of injuries, but that is not an excuse. There are still more or less three months of the season to go and we have the same mentality. The objective is to win every competition.”
For Monaco, the focus now shifts to trying to qualify for European football again next season after being eliminated in the Champions League play-offs for the second consecutive year.
“We could have done more in this campaign but it has still been satisfying,” said Monaco coach Sébastien Pocognoli, whose team sits eighth in Ligue 1. “Let’s hope this experience helps us progress more quickly in the future.”
