Just a week after halting their slide against Aston Villa, Liverpool returned to old habits on Sunday, suffering a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Manchester City in Pep Guardiola’s 1000th game as a manager.

Arne Slot’s side now sits in eighth place after their fifth loss of the season. Having already conceded 17 goals in 2025/26—the joint second-most among the top 15 Premier League teams—it’s clear that defensive frailties remain a pressing concern for the reigning champions.

Liverpool Second Best Across the Board

Despite being just four points off City in second, Liverpool were outplayed in nearly every department. This is particularly worrying for a team that has now suffered five defeats in just 11 games. Only the bottom six teams in the league have lost more this season.

Guardiola opted for an unchanged XI for the ‘Super Sunday’ clash, a move that had kept City unbeaten in their previous 16 Premier League matches when naming the same starting lineup.

Early Drama and Haaland Milestone

The first major moment came when referee Chris Kavanagh awarded City a penalty after VAR intervened following Giorgi Mamardashvili’s trip on Jérémy Doku. Erling Haaland missed from 12 yards—City’s fourth penalty miss in five attempts against Liverpool—but made amends before half-time with a trademark towering header, taking his Premier League goal tally to 99. With 16 games left this season, he now has a chance to break Alan Shearer’s record as the fastest player to reach 100 goals, having done it in just 107 games compared to Shearer’s 124.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk had a headed equaliser ruled out for offside, but the game was already slipping away. Though Liverpool edged possession 51.5% to 48.5%, they were almost non-existent in attack, registering just one shot on target—none in the first half.

The contest was effectively over in first-half stoppage time when Nico Gonzalez’s deflected strike found the net off van Dijk, a moment that epitomised Liverpool’s struggles this season.

Slot Frustrated by Ineffectiveness

Van Dijk barely attempted to block Gonzalez’s shot, and multiple substitutions before the hour mark failed to change the course of the game. Slot’s frustration on the touchline was evident.

Even with most Liverpool players boasting pass completion rates above 80%, the Reds struggled to penetrate dangerous areas. Mo Salah, the busiest of Liverpool’s attackers inside City’s box with six touches, failed to register a shot on target and was unsuccessful in all three dribbles. The Egyptian also gave the ball away 17 times—the most of any player—and won only four of 11 one-on-one duels.

Doku Shines

Jeremy Doku’s brilliant curling goal—his first in 24 Premier League games—capped a dominant performance for City. The Belgian completed over ten dribbles, won more than ten duels, created three chances, and had three shots on target, becoming the first player to achieve such a feat in a single Premier League game since Eden Hazard for Chelsea against West Ham in April 2019.

This three-goal defeat marked Slot’s heaviest as Liverpool manager, and Doku’s strike was Liverpool’s 17th conceded in the league—a number the reigning champions have not allowed in their opening 11 games since winning the title in 2020/21.

Time to Return to Basics

Dominik Szoboszlai finally registered Liverpool’s first shot on target in the 15th minute, saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Beyond that, Liverpool struggled to create meaningful chances and were repeatedly caught offside, flagged at least seven times in each of their last two league matches.

The upcoming international break comes at a challenging moment for Slot, who must urgently address the team’s recurring errors. Possession, pass accuracy, and dominance are meaningless without tangible results. Liverpool need to strip back to fundamentals and rebuild the basics if they hope to salvage their season.
