Liverpool are closing in on a late swoop for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, moving ahead of Chelsea as the player prepares for a deadline-day medical.

The Reds have been working quietly behind the scenes to secure the defender’s signature while Chelsea attempted to finalize a deal to bring him to Stamford Bridge. As recently as Sunday night, sources close to Chelsea remained hopeful of turning the situation in their favour.

However, Liverpool have now taken a clear lead in the race and are confident the transfer is effectively wrapped up.

The Merseyside club have submitted a £60 million offer to Rennes and believe they have won over Jacquet by presenting a clear pathway into the first team. Liverpool outlined a structured development plan that would see the 20-year-old compete for regular opportunities in the near future.

Chelsea’s crowded squad and their tendency to loan out young signings may have worked against them. The club already has several defensive prospects pushing for first-team places, including Mamadou Sarr, Aaron Anselmino, and Josh Acheampong, and must be careful not to block their progression.

In contrast, Liverpool see less competition in central defence and believe Jacquet can grow into a top-level player within their system.

Jacquet is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday, with Liverpool confident he will complete the move. Although the deal is expected to be finalised now, the defender is set to join the club after the end of the current season.

A five-year contract has been proposed, with sources suggesting the financial package is similar to Chelsea’s previous offer in terms of both transfer fee and salary.

It is understood that Liverpool have strategically handled negotiations to convince Jacquet that Anfield is the ideal environment for him to fulfil his potential in the years ahead.
