Liverpool boss Slot hopes for strong response after Galatasaray defeat

Liverpool FC head coach Arne Slot is confident his side can bounce back from their midweek defeat to Galatasaray as they prepare for two crucial home fixtures.
Liverpool welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday before hosting Galatasaray again as they attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit in their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie.
Despite the setback in Turkey, Slot believes the performance offered positives and expects a strong reaction from his players.
“We don’t think everything should be much worse than it was before, but we didn’t play our best game of the season,” Slot said.
“For an away leg in Europe we were still able to generate enough chances to score a goal — more than another team might do away in the Champions League.
However, the Liverpool boss acknowledged his side must improve in both boxes.
“We have struggled with converting the chances we have and we have a bad cocktail of conceding chances and goals. If we cannot repair that every game will be difficult.
“But I have confidence we have quality players and the next two games are at home. I am really looking forward to playing twice at home now with the support from the fans that can make a massive difference.”
Expectations against Tottenham
Slot accepts that Liverpool are always expected to win at Anfield regardless of the opponent’s form.
“If Spurs were first in the league everyone would still expect us to win at Anfield — the same with Manchester City or Arsenal. We are expected to win at home,” he said.
Victory on Sunday would mark a historic milestone for Liverpool — their 1,500th home win.
“Expectations come from history. We can win a lot of home games, it doesn’t matter who we face, expectations are always sky high. This club is able to win things — that’s what we’ve done in the last few years.”
Slot added that maintaining those standards is part of life at a club with Liverpool’s ambitions.
“We are a top club, the bar should be high by the people around us. Last season we achieved one of the things we wanted to achieve by winning the league and coming close in the Carabao Cup. Now we are still in the Champions League and the FA Cup and competing.”
Gravenberch and Ngumoha updates
Slot also discussed the impact of Ryan Gravenberch after the midfielder signed a new contract, though he admitted the Dutchman has yet to replicate the level he showed during last season’s title-winning campaign.
“All the players have different profiles but it is clear the club sees his importance, which is why he signed a new deal,” Slot explained.
“He’s a young player with the ability to grow. His first season wasn’t at last season’s level but that is normal for young players. There is more to come from him.”
Meanwhile, 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha could be handed a starting role in the upcoming matches.
“We have treated him carefully. He cannot be on the pitch too many days because of stress fractures, which other players at the club have experienced,” Slot said.
“But Rio can start for us. I said he would get more playing time and he is an option to start one of the upcoming three games.”
Focus on the season run-in
With Liverpool currently sixth in the Premier League table, Slot’s primary objective for the remainder of the campaign is to extract the maximum from his squad.
“What I want is that every single player gets the maximum out of themselves until the end of the season,” he said.
“It’s the only way to get the maximum from what is in it for us. Sometimes you also need a bit of luck — the margins are small in competitions like the Champions League.”
Slot concluded that reaching the 1,500 home-win milestone would be another reminder of the club’s rich history.
“It only pushes me and us to hold ourselves to the highest standards,” he said.
“If we reach that mark I’m not responsible for all 1,500 because I wasn’t there for most of them! But it shows you are at a top club, and here we work every day to win something.”
