Bayern boss Kompany hopes for fully fit squad for season run-in

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is hopeful his side will have a fully fit squad after the upcoming international break as the club prepares for a decisive run-in across multiple competitions.
The Bundesliga leaders have been hit by several injury concerns in recent weeks and will be without a number of key players for Saturday’s league clash with Bayer Leverkusen.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and defender Hiroki Ito were already sidelined before backup keeper Jonas Urbig suffered a concussion and attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala along with winger Alphonso Davies picked up injuries during Tuesday’s 6-1 victory over Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League round-of-16 first leg.
Veteran goalkeeper Sven Ulreich is expected to start against Leverkusen, with Kompany believing the international break has come at an ideal time for his squad to recover.
“It could have been worse,” Kompany told reporters. “Jonas will hopefully be back sometime next week. Jamal maybe next week he will train again. For Phonzie the international break will help and I hope we will have a full squad after the international break. That is positive for the final stretch of the season.”
Bayern currently sit top of the Bundesliga with 66 points, holding an 11-point advantage over second-placed Borussia Dortmund with nine matches remaining.
They also remain in contention for multiple trophies, having reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal where they will face Leverkusen on April 22, while the return leg against Atalanta in Munich takes place next week.
The Bundesliga pauses in the final week of March for international fixtures and World Cup playoffs before resuming on April 4. Meanwhile, Davies has already been ruled out of Canada’s upcoming friendlies against Iceland and Tunisia.
Kompany stressed that, despite the growing injury list, there are no serious long-term concerns.
“The good thing is there are no bad long-term injuries,” he said. “It is just frustrating for the lads who just want to play.”
The Bayern coach could, however, welcome back star striker Harry Kane for Saturday’s match after the England captain missed the last two games with a minor muscle issue.
“He might play tomorrow,” Kompany added. “He had a full week of training. We didn’t take any risks with him. We can’t let up even though we’re 11 points ahead. If Harry is fit, he’ll play.”
