Lionel Messi Determined to Feature at 2026 World Cup Despite Age and Fitness Concerns

Lionel Messi has revealed that he hopes to feature at the 2026 World Cup in North America, though he admits his participation will depend on his physical condition as he approaches the final stretch of his illustrious career.
The Argentina captain, who will turn 39 next June, said he remains motivated to defend his nation’s 2022 World Cup crown but will only decide next year whether his body can handle another major tournament.
“It’s something extraordinary to be able to play in a World Cup, and I would love to,” Messi told NBC News in an interview released Monday.
“I want to be there, to feel good, and to be an important part of the team if I’m selected. I’ll evaluate things day by day when I start preseason with Inter Miami next year and see if I can really be 100%. If I can be useful, then I’ll make my decision.”
Messi, who recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, appears in no rush to retire. Since joining the Major League Soccer club in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has reinvigorated interest in American football ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The forward’s international career has been marked by persistence and redemption. After several near-misses with Argentina, Messi finally lifted the Copa América in 2021, followed by an unforgettable triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Argentina beat France 4–2 on penalties.
“Winning the World Cup was the dream of my life,” Messi reflected.
“It was the only thing missing at the professional level. I’ve been fortunate to achieve everything with Barcelona and individually, but every player dreams of becoming world champion.”
Since making his Argentina debut in 2005, Messi has played 195 matches and scored a record 114 goals for his country. A return in 2026 would mark a record sixth World Cup appearance, further cementing his legacy as one of football’s greatest ever players.
