Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior confirmed on Friday that he does not have a fixed first-choice goalkeeper after leaving Robert Sánchez out of the starting XI in midweek.

The English boss handed Denmark’s Filip Jørgensen the nod for Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa, following Sánchez’s struggles in a defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Championship hopefuls Wrexham, Rosenior explained his approach to the goalkeeping position.

“For me, genuinely, I look at the goalkeeper position differently for each game,” he said. “I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch. Traditionally, if you change a goalkeeper, people say ‘he’s now number one.’ That’s not the case here. We will try to pick the best team possible for each match.”

Rosenior addressed concerns over rhythm and confidence, emphasizing flexibility over continuity.

“You need continuity, but you also need to win games. There are different ways to approach it, modern coaching, old-school, anything. I pick the team I think gives us the best chance to win. I don’t think I’ve had the same starting XI in any game we’ve played. If we win, it’s the right decision; if we lose, continuity is blamed—such is football.”

The Chelsea boss praised Sánchez’s reaction to being dropped, highlighting the Spaniard’s professionalism.

“Rob has been absolutely magnificent,” he said. “I’ve also seen players like Alejandro Garnacho respond really well to being out of the team. To be successful, short and long term, you need a squad with the right mentality, and so far, Rob has shown exactly that.”

Rosenior also spoke highly of Wrexham, who are enjoying a remarkable rise through the leagues and are now in contention for the Championship play-offs.

“When you see a club grow and improve like Wrexham, it’s a great story,” he said, praising their manager Phil Parkinson. “They’ve done an incredible job, and we know it will be a really tough game. There’s a lot of energy and momentum in their squad.”
