LeBron James’ 21-Year Run as NBA All-Star Starter Finally Ends

LeBron James’ remarkable 21-year streak as an NBA All-Star starter came to an end on Monday, as the Los Angeles Lakers superstar was left out of the 10 starters announced for next month’s mid-season showcase.
The 41-year-old, who had started in every All-Star Game since 2005, was the most notable omission for the event set to take place at the Los Angeles Clippers’ Intuit Dome on February 15.
This year’s starters—five from the Western Conference and five from the Eastern Conference—will be joined by 14 additional players selected by the All-Star Game coaches.
Western Conference starters feature Lakers teammate Luka Doncic, Oklahoma City Thunder MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, and San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama. These players were chosen through combined votes from fans, players, and media.
Eastern Conference starters are led by Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who topped the voting, alongside New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson, Detroit Pistons’ Cade Cunningham, Philadelphia 76ers’ Tyrese Maxey, and Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown.
Although James is expected to be included in the pool of All-Star reserves, missing out on the starting lineup in his 23rd NBA season marks the conclusion of an extraordinary era.
James missed the first 14 games of the season due to sciatica but has since averaged 22.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.
The NBA has also revamped this year’s All-Star format to generate renewed excitement. The weekend will feature a three-team round-robin tournament, with two U.S. teams facing off against a global World squad. Each game will last 12 minutes per quarter, with a minimum of eight players per team. The championship will pit the top two teams, based on records or point differential, against each other.
LeBron’s absence from the starting 10 highlights how the league is evolving, even as the veteran continues to leave his mark on the game.
