Newcastle United F.C. were denied a first-leg victory in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie with FC Barcelona after conceding a stoppage-time penalty, as Lamine Yamal converted from the spot to secure a 1–1 draw and end Barcelona’s four-game winning run across all competitions.

Roared on by a fervent home crowd at St James’ Park, Newcastle flew out of the blocks in the opening stages. Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga both tested Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García, who made a pair of unconvincing saves to keep the visitors level.

Grateful to survive the early onslaught, Barcelona gradually settled into the contest and nearly took a fortunate lead when Dan Burn almost turned Fermín López’s delivery into his own net, the deflection drifting inches wide.

Determined to avoid a repeat of their matchday-one defeat to Barcelona in the league phase, Eddie Howe’s side continued to push forward as the first half progressed.

However, the hosts struggled to apply the finishing touch in the final third, with a dangerous cross from Elanga just evading William Osula at the back post.

Newcastle carried their momentum into the second half, with Osula firing over the bar after being picked out by Lewis Hall’s well-timed through ball.

Barcelona threatened at the other end soon after, but Raphinha’s low cross was surprisingly swept wide by veteran striker Robert Lewandowski.

With the match finely balanced entering the final 25 minutes, both managers turned to their benches in search of fresh energy. Jacob Murphy almost made an instant impact after coming on, but volleyed wildly over from 12 yards.

Newcastle went even closer in the 74th minute when Harvey Barnes curled a superb effort against the post from inside the area. Joelinton then tucked away the rebound, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally arrived with four minutes remaining. Barnes found space in the penalty area and coolly volleyed home Murphy’s precise delivery, sparking wild celebrations among the Gallowgate End.

But Newcastle’s joy proved heartbreakingly short-lived. Deep into stoppage time, Malick Thiaw clumsily brought down Dani Olmo inside the area, leaving the referee with little choice but to award a penalty.

Yamal stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, silencing the home crowd and rescuing a crucial draw for Barcelona at the death.

It was a cruel ending for Howe’s side, who must now regroup ahead of next week’s second leg in Catalonia with the tie delicately poised.
