Goalkeeper Kinsky lasts only 17 minutes as Atlético Madrid rout struggling Tottenham

A disastrous opening quarter saw Tottenham Hotspur F.C. fall behind early as Atlético Madrid ran riot in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, claiming a 5–2 victory and extending their unbeaten home knockout streak in the competition to 20 under Diego Simeone.
Any hope that Tottenham could escape their poor Premier League form was dashed within six minutes when goalkeeper Antonín Kinský slipped while attempting a pass, gifting Ademola Lookman possession. Lookman squared to Julián Álvarez, who cleverly set up Marcos Llorente to slot home the opener.
Eight minutes later, Tottenham’s woes continued as Micky van de Ven slipped, allowing Antoine Griezmann a free run to score the second. Moments after the restart, Kinský mishit a clearance straight to Álvarez, who tapped into an empty net, ending the Czech goalkeeper’s night after just 17 minutes, with Guglielmo Vicario taking over.
Vicario was quickly tested, conceding within five minutes. A Griezmann free-kick was deflected by Pape Matar Sarr, and despite Vicario’s best efforts, Robin Le Normand bundled in the rebound for Atlético’s fourth.
Tottenham briefly responded when Richarlison set up Pedro Porro, who calmly finished to pull one back. Lookman forced a sharp save from Vicario, and Cristian Romero struck the post from a corner, but the momentum remained with the hosts.
Ten minutes into the second half, any Tottenham revival turned into a rout. After Jan Oblak denied Richarlison, the rebound fell to Griezmann, who quickly found Álvarez. The Argentine raced 60 yards to score his second, putting the game beyond doubt.
Dominic Solanke extended Atlético’s dominance 15 minutes from time, finishing from Porro’s pass following an errant Oblak clearance to make it 5–2. Van de Ven wasted a late chance to reignite the tie, ballooning over the bar with just over 10 minutes left.
The result marks Tottenham’s sixth consecutive loss in all competitions, having gone into the match seeking a fourth UCL win and a clean sheet. For Los Colchoneros, it’s now 16 wins in their last 18 home games, giving them a commanding three-goal advantage ahead of the return leg in London next Wednesday.
