Chelsea produced a remarkable second-half turnaround to overturn a two-goal deficit and defeat West Ham United 3-2, securing their first-ever Premier League comeback from two goals down at half-time and moving into the top four.

Fresh from an impressive midweek victory over Napoli, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior made seven changes to his starting lineup. However, the reshuffle appeared costly early on, as West Ham began the match with confidence and intent. Taty Castellanos went close inside the opening minutes, setting the tone for the visitors’ dominant start.

The Hammers, who have been prolific in the early stages of matches this season, continued that trend as they struck first inside 15 minutes. Jarrod Bowen’s whipped cross from the right evaded Pablo and crept inside the far post, marking his fourth consecutive goal within the opening half-hour.

Chelsea struggled to respond, with Cole Palmer’s return doing little to spark an attack that lacked cohesion and creativity throughout a disappointing first half. West Ham repeatedly exploited space down Chelsea’s left flank, where Jorrel Hato and Alejandro Garnacho were unable to contain the dangerous partnership of Bowen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 36th minute with a well-worked move. Bowen released Wan-Bissaka, whose cut-back was emphatically finished by Crysencio Summerville for his fourth goal in as many matches.

Frustration grew among the home supporters, and loud boos greeted the half-time whistle. Rosenior reacted decisively, introducing Joao Pedro, Wesley Fofana, and Marc Cucurella at the break in a bid to revive his side.

The substitutions had an immediate impact. After Robert Sanchez denied Mateus Fernandes and Bowen at the other end, Chelsea found a route back into the contest. Fofana surged forward and delivered a pinpoint cross, allowing Joao Pedro to head home and reduce the deficit.

Momentum swung firmly in Chelsea’s favour. Alphonse Areola produced a superb save to keep out Moises Caicedo’s powerful effort from distance, but he was powerless moments later. Malo Gusto’s header struck the crossbar via Max Kilman before Cucurella reacted quickest to smash in the rebound and level the score.

With the crowd roaring them on, Chelsea pressed relentlessly for a winner. However, they almost paid the price when Jean-Clair Todibo struck the post from close range.

Rosenior’s side maintained their composure and finally completed the comeback in stoppage time. Joao Pedro found space on the right and pulled the ball back for Enzo Fernandez, who calmly turned in the winner on the third anniversary of his signing for the club.

West Ham’s misery was compounded late on when Todibo was sent off for grabbing Pedro by the neck. The defeat marked their seventh loss in eight London derbies, while Chelsea’s dramatic victory lifted them into the Premier League’s top four.
