Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich were forced to settle for a second consecutive league draw after being held 2-2 by a determined Hamburg side at the Volksparkstadion, bringing their nine-match winning streak against the hosts to an end.

Despite securing victory over PSV Eindhoven in their final UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture, Bayern returned to domestic action eager to respond following last weekend’s surprise defeat to Augsburg, which ended their unbeaten Bundesliga run.

The visitors began brightly, showing urgency from the opening whistle. Michael Olise and Lennart Karl both tested Daniel Heuer Fernandes early on, with the Hamburg goalkeeper producing two fine saves to keep his side level.

Joshua Kimmich soon asserted himself, unleashing a powerful effort from distance that rattled the crossbar. However, the midfielder’s influence proved costly moments later when a heavy touch inside the penalty area led to a clumsy challenge on Nicolai Remberg.

Fabio Vieira stepped up and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty beyond Manuel Neuer, sending the home crowd into raptures and raising hopes of Hamburg’s first victory over Bayern since 2009.

Those hopes were quickly tempered by Harry Kane, who restored parity with his 22nd league goal of the campaign. After Kimmich’s low cross found its way into the box, the England striker reacted quickest to turn the ball home.

Unimpressed by the stalemate at half-time, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany made an immediate statement by introducing Luis Diaz at the interval — a decision that paid instant dividends.

Within a minute of the restart, Diaz latched onto Michael Olise’s perfectly weighted through ball and calmly slid his finish past Heuer Fernandes to give Bayern the lead.

Yet Hamburg refused to be overawed and responded in spirited fashion. Luka Vuskovic rose highest to meet William Mikelbrencis’s precise cross, powering a header past Neuer to restore parity.

The hosts nearly completed a remarkable turnaround when Fabio Vieira fired towards an empty net after Neuer had strayed from his goal, only for Alphonso Davies to produce a crucial last-ditch clearance.

Both sides pushed for a late winner, but neither could find a decisive breakthrough. Hamburg were left satisfied with a hard-earned point that lifts them to 13th in the table, while Bayern’s lead at the summit could be cut to nine points should Borussia Dortmund capitalise on their slip.
