Nick Kyrgios believes few male players would embrace the chance to face a top woman, as the maverick Australian prepares to take on women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition later this month.

The December 28 match in Dubai, which pits Kyrgios against the four-time Grand Slam champion, has drawn both excitement and criticism. While many view it as entertainment, some critics argue it risks undermining the reputation of women’s tennis.

The showdown echoes the legendary 1973 match where Billie Jean King defeated 55-year-old former Grand Slam champion Bobby Riggs. Kyrgios admitted he is feeling a mix of confidence and nerves ahead of his own exhibition.

“I think my chances are really high. I’m very confident in my ability,” Kyrgios said with a smile during the World Tennis League in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
“It’s going to be fun, but I’m also a bit nervous. I like doing things that are outside the box. Honestly, not many males in my position would have done that and taken the opportunity.”

Unlike Riggs, Kyrgios remains an active player on the men’s tour, despite playing only five professional matches in 2025 due to injuries that have plagued his career.

Back in September, Kyrgios suggested that women cannot return men’s serves and said he could beat Sabalenka without giving 100%. Still, he added that the match could foster mutual respect between the men’s and women’s tours.

Sabalenka acknowledged that men are “biologically stronger,” but emphasized that the exhibition is not about that and will instead help elevate women’s tennis.

Known for his talent and unapologetic personality, Kyrgios admitted he isn’t sure how the Dubai event will play out.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen, we’ll see,” he said.
“I’ve been in a lot of controversies in my career, and this is another thing I get to experience.”
