Former Denmark international and ex-FC Copenhagen captain Lukas Lerager has officially joined Polish side Widzew Łódź. The 32-year-old midfielder becomes the club’s second signing of the winter transfer window.

Lerager has inked a contract with Widzew that runs until June 2028, with an option for an additional season.

The central midfielder spent the last four seasons at FC Copenhagen, where he was a key figure for the Danish champions and occasionally captained the team. Over his tenure, he made 219 appearances and scored 32 goals. In the recent fall season, Lerager featured in 17 league matches and five UEFA Champions League group stage games.

Prior to his time in Copenhagen, Lerager played for Danish clubs AB and Viborg FF, Belgian side Zulte Waregem, French team Girondins Bordeaux, and Italian club Genoa. He has also earned 10 caps for Denmark, including participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On joining Widzew, Lerager said:
“I’m happy to have signed with Widzew. After so many years at one club, you think carefully about your next step. For me, it was important to join a team I genuinely want to play for. I was impressed by Widzew’s ambitions and the community that supports the club. I’m glad to continue my career here.”

The Dane added:
“I never give up and always play for my teammates. I have a lot of energy and play as a box-to-box midfielder. I communicate well with both the team and the coach, helping pass instructions to the players. I hope to bring this to Widzew, which will help us win games — and that’s what matters most.”

Widzew Sports Director Dariusz Adamczuk expressed his excitement over the signing:
“We’re very pleased to welcome a player of Lukas Lerager’s caliber. He has been a key player for a side that regularly wins the Danish Championship, and he has also succeeded in Ligue 1 and Serie A. As recently as last autumn, he started in Champions League group stage matches. Lukas will bring Widzew not only exceptional skill but also the crucial experience we need.”

Earlier in the winter break, Widzew also secured the signing of Norwegian Christopher Cheng from Sandefjord Fotball.

Widzew currently sit 13th in the Ekstraklasa with 20 points from 18 matches. The Łódź-based club will resume preparations for the second half of the season on 5 January, including a training camp in Belek, Turkey, and four friendly matches.
