If Igor Tudor required proof of the scale of his challenge at Tottenham Hotspur, Sunday’s 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal provided overwhelming evidence.

There had been cautious optimism among Spurs supporters before the North London derby, with hopes that Tudor might spark a “new manager bounce” against an Arsenal side feeling the pressure in the title race. Instead, the visitors cruised to their biggest league win at Tottenham since 1978, underlining the gulf between the rivals.

The result left Tudor in no doubt about the seriousness of the situation. With 11 games remaining, Tottenham sit 16th in the table, just four points above the relegation zone — a precarious position that raises the spectre of their first drop from the top flight since 1977.

“Today, totally different worlds,” the blunt-speaking Croatian admitted. “Two totally different psychological and physical worlds.

“A lack of confidence is very evident in the team. I’m very sad and very angry, but in one way it is also good to understand where we are.

“What is the goal of this club? What is the goal of this team? To become serious — not just a group of 20 players. Each of us has to look in the mirror and really start to change habits. Working hard is the only way.”

Form Points to Trouble

Tottenham’s recent numbers make for grim reading. They have yet to win a Premier League match in 2026 and have managed just two home league victories all season.

Across the last 12 games, Spurs rank bottom of the form table — five points worse off than both Nottingham Forest and West Ham United, the two sides directly beneath them. Both appear better equipped for the demands of a relegation fight.

Sunday’s derby encapsulated their struggles. Aside from a brief spell after Randal Kolo Muani’s equaliser, Arsenal dominated proceedings and could easily have extended the scoreline further.

Injuries and Urgency

Tudor, formerly of Juventus and Lazio, pointed to a crippling injury list that left him with just 13 senior outfield players available. Suspended captain Cristian Romero will also miss next weekend’s clash at Fulham — a fixture that now carries enormous significance.

“It was too much Arsenal for us in this moment with the problems we have,” Tudor said. “You prepare in the best possible way, then the game shows you reality.

“I told the players: stay quiet, come back Tuesday, and restart. After three or four training sessions, we must work harder than we have until now. We have to change our habits and change the state of mind.”

For Tudor, the derby defeat was not just painful — it was clarifying. The scale of Tottenham’s plight is undeniable, and the battle ahead is no longer about pride or rivalry, but survival.
