Ħamrun Spartans overcome Floriana to reach Jubilee Cup Quarter-Finals

Ħamrun Spartans booked their place in the Jubilee Cup quarter-finals after a well-earned 2–0 victory over Floriana, setting up a mouth-watering clash with Valletta in the next round.
The Malta champions were made to work hard for their win against a determined Floriana side that pushed them throughout. However, two costly defensive errors ultimately proved decisive, gifting Ħamrun both goals and sealing the Greens’ exit from the competition.
The match was not without controversy, as Floriana felt aggrieved twenty minutes from time when Spartans goalkeeper Henry Bonello escaped with only a yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Mattia Veselji outside the box. Despite that flashpoint, Ħamrun’s composure and finishing quality made the difference as they continued their pursuit of silverware in this one-off tournament.
This result also marked Ħamrun’s second win over Floriana in as many weeks, following their 3–1 triumph in the YoHealth Malta Premier earlier this month.
Tactical Changes and Early Chances
Coach Giacomo Modica rotated heavily from the side that lost 3–0 to Samsunspor in the UEFA Conference League, making seven changes. Nikolai Micallef, Sven Xerri, Merlin Hadži, Domantas Šimkus, Éder, and Shaisen Attard all earned starting spots.
Floriana, meanwhile, handed a rare start to goalkeeper Pablo Martín Picón, while Manuel Areias led their attack.
Ħamrun could have taken the lead inside the opening minute when Matias García sent Semar Smajlagić through on goal, but the Bosnian’s low effort was comfortably saved by Picón.
As the first half progressed, Floriana settled into the match, enjoying more possession though without posing much threat to Bonello’s goal. Their best moment came on 18 minutes when a Jake Grech cross caused confusion in the Spartans’ box before being cleared.
Ħamrun Strike First
Against the run of play, Ħamrun broke the deadlock on 28 minutes. García released Hadži on the right, whose cross deflected off Lucas López and wrong-footed Picón for an unfortunate own goal.
Moments later, Ħamrun almost doubled their lead when Éder intercepted a loose pass and teed up Smajlagić, whose curling shot struck the upright.
Floriana responded with a sharp counterattack, as Veselji turned his marker and forced a fine save from Bonello. Before the break, both Hadži and Smajlagić were denied by Picón’s quick reflexes, keeping Floriana in the contest.
Clinical Finish and Late Controversy
After half-time, Ħamrun began to control proceedings more comfortably, with García firing narrowly wide just past the hour mark.
The main talking point came twenty minutes from time when Bonello raced off his line and clattered into Veselji. The Floriana players protested vigorously, but referee Philip Farrugia opted for a yellow card rather than a dismissal.
Floriana came close to equalising 12 minutes from the end when Owen Spiteri headed just over after connecting with an Areias cross.
However, their hopes were dashed moments later. A defensive mix-up between Mabea and Koffi gifted possession to Joseph Mbong, who broke clear and calmly slotted past Picón to seal a 2–0 win for the Spartans.
Ħamrun now advance to the Jubilee Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Valletta in another classic Maltese football rivalry.
