Ħamrun Spartans produced a spirited performance but ultimately fell short in their bid to keep their UEFA Conference League Play-Off hopes alive, suffering a 2–0 defeat to Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

For over an hour, the Maltese champions matched their high-profile opponents with an energetic, aggressive display built on relentless pressing and swift transitions. They created several promising opportunities and disrupted Shakhtar’s rhythm for long stretches of the contest.

However, the Ukrainians’ superior technical quality proved decisive midway through the second half. Within three minutes, Meirelles and Isaque struck in quick succession to seal victory and confirm Shakhtar’s place in the Round of 16.

The defeat leaves Ħamrun unable to break into the competition’s top 24 – the threshold for the February Play-Off round. Their European journey is not over, however, with one final outing next week against Shamrock Rovers in Dublin, where they will aim to add to their three-point tally and conclude a historic campaign on a positive note.

First Half

Coach Giacomo Modica made several adjustments to his side, with Ognjen Bjelicic stepping into the back line in place of the suspended Vincenzo Polito. Ante Coric and Jovan Cadenovic returned to the starting XI, while Smajlagic operated centrally in attack.

Shakhtar dominated early possession as expected, but it was Ħamrun who carved out the first big chance after 10 minutes. Coric picked out Compri at the far post, and the Brazilian’s cross found Joseph Mbong completely unmarked—only for the winger to miss the final touch with the goal gaping.

As Shakhtar pushed forward, Bonello denied Ferreira with a sharp stop on 25 minutes, while Garcia produced an excellent block to thwart Bondarenko moments earlier.

Ħamrun nearly grabbed a shock lead six minutes before halftime when Mbong teed up Coric inside the box, but Fesiun pushed away the Croatian’s fierce effort. The Shakhtar goalkeeper was again alert moments later, saving Mbong’s low drive as the Spartans ended the half strongly.

Second Half

Unimpressed by his side’s first-half display, Shakhtar coach Arda Turan made two changes at the break, introducing Tobias and Ocheretko.

Ħamrun remained dangerous on the counter and came close again on 55 minutes when Cadenovic intercepted a loose ball and released Mbong, who attempted an audacious lob but sent it over.

At the other end, Bonello produced two outstanding reflex saves to deny Ocheretko just after the hour mark—yet Shakhtar finally broke through seconds later. Azarov delivered a precise cross into the area, and Meirelles timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and finish past Bonello.

Barely a minute passed before Shakhtar doubled their lead. Pedrinho slipped the ball to Isaque, who showed composure to lift his finish over the onrushing Bonello.

The Ukrainians continued to press for more, with Bonello forced into another smart stop to deny Ferreira on 78 minutes. Ħamrun tried to respond, and substitute Shaun Attard fired narrowly over late on, but the deficit remained.

In the end, the Spartans bowed out against opposition of genuine European pedigree—but not without showing once again the resilience and ambition that defined their memorable continental run.
