Gomez Scores Twice as Brighton Thrash Leeds to Climb into Top Eight
Danny Welbeck’s sixth Premier League goal of the season set Brighton & Hove Albion on their way in a commanding 3-0 victory over Leeds United, who have now suffered nine defeats in their last ten top-flight away matches.
Leeds, seeking back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since November 2022, were quickly on the back foot after conceding in the 11th minute. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari had already signalled danger with a high-pressing interception and a tame shot, before Yankuba Minteh slid a delicate pass through to Mats Wieffer, whose first-time assist allowed Welbeck to finish neatly.
Brighton dominated the rain-soaked first half at the Amex Stadium, nearly doubling their lead when Welbeck’s strike from the edge of the box went wide. Minteh also came close, dribbling past defenders only to narrowly miss the target. Leeds’ best chance before halftime was snuffed out by timely interventions from Lewis Dunk and Jan Paul van Hecke, leaving the visitors with no shots on target by the break.
The second half saw Brighton continue their control, with Georginio Rutter testing the side netting. Leeds’ closest attempt came around the hour mark when Dominic Calvert-Lewin fired just wide, offering brief encouragement to the travelling support against a side that hadn’t kept a clean sheet in 11 league games.
However, any hopes of a Leeds comeback were quickly dashed. Minteh’s dazzling run down the wing created space for Rutter to dummy, allowing Diego Gómez to score a simple tap-in. Brighton struck again six minutes later when Rutter capitalised on a loose touch from Jayden Bogle and set up Gómez for his second goal of the afternoon, sealing a comprehensive victory.
The result keeps Brighton unbeaten in nine home league games dating back to last season (W5, D4) and extends their streak without defeat against Leeds in the Premier League to seven encounters (W4, D3)—the most times the Seagulls have faced a top-flight opponent without losing, and the most Leeds have failed to beat a single team in the division.
