Getafe End Winless Streak with Gritty Away Victory Over Athletic Club

Getafe finally ended their 11-match winless run against Athletic Club with a hard-fought 1–0 victory at San Mamés on Saturday evening — their first triumph over Los Leones in more than a decade.
From the outset, Los Azulones showed greater intent, pressing high and unsettling the hosts in the driving Bilbao rain. The slippery conditions made precise passing difficult, but it was Getafe who adapted fastest.
Athletic looked to involve Nico Williams at every opportunity, though he struggled to make an impact, while Luis Milla’s deflected strike forced Unai Simón into an awkward save at the other end.
With the Basque side second-best across the pitch, only Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta offered much resistance to Getafe’s relentless energy. It took until midway through the first half for Athletic to threaten, as Mikel Jauregizar broke into the box but was quickly crowded out.
Getafe continued to press, with Diego Rico going close before a worrying moment for the hosts as captain Iñigo Lekue was forced off on the half-hour mark — a blow that further tilted momentum towards the visitors.
Moments later, Borja Mayoral narrowly failed to turn in Milla’s teasing free-kick, while Jesús Areso denied Kiko Femenía after a dangerous run down the flank.
Athletic’s only real chance of the half came in stoppage time, when David Soria saved well from Oihan Sancet’s low effort.
The hosts emerged after the break with renewed purpose, and Gorka Guruzeta somehow curled wide from close range after finding himself unmarked in the area. Williams began to see more of the ball as Athletic pressed forward, but Getafe remained a threat on the counter.
An hour in, the match had opened up into a lively end-to-end affair, though genuine chances were scarce. Adrián Liso’s low effort, comfortably gathered by Simón, was as close as either side came before the decisive moment arrived.
With 15 minutes remaining, chaos in the Athletic defence allowed the ball to fall kindly for Mayoral, who kept his composure to drill a low shot beyond Simón and stun the home crowd.
Athletic threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser, but Getafe stood firm to secure a vital win — their first in seven LaLiga matches.
For Athletic, the defeat marks just their fourth loss at San Mamés in 43 league games (W26, D13), while for Getafe, it represents a long-awaited breakthrough and a much-needed boost to their season.
