Four Maltese wins on Day Four as Peplow Clinches Knockout Qualification in Sofia

Four Maltese players emerged victorious on the fourth day of the World Snooker Championship group phase in Sofia, Bulgaria, with Chris Peplow also sealing his place in the knockout rounds.
Peplow was the first Maltese player in action on Tuesday and continued his fine run with a 3–1 win over Romania’s Vladut Ciuche. After dropping the opening frame, Peplow responded strongly, winning the next three frames in succession to take the match. The frame scores were 40–64, 48–38, 58–4 and 71–2. This third victory guarantees Peplow qualification for the knockout phase, even though he still has one group match remaining.
Aaron Busuttil and Joseph Casha both enjoyed comfortable 3–0 wins. Busuttil defeated Germany’s Manuel Ederer with frame scores of 98–15, 64–19 and 65–33, while Casha overcame England’s Steven Hughes 3–0, producing a 52-point break in the final frame to win 48–28, 60–12 and 88–16.
Busuttil has now completed his group matches, with his qualification dependent on the outcome of the final group encounter between Kaylan Patel of England and China’s Wang Xinzhong, both of whom previously beat the Maltese player. Casha, meanwhile, needs to claim at least two frames in his final group match to progress to the next stage.
Veteran Alex Borg also secured a crucial victory, beating Latvia’s Nikita Bazilevics 3–1. Borg opened with a 65-point break in the first frame and went on to win with scores of 77–38, 59–9, 45–70 and 73–39. A win in his final group match would almost certainly secure Borg a place in the knockout rounds.
Brian Cini narrowly missed out on victory, losing 3–2 to England’s Wayne Brown after a deciding frame. Cini’s hopes of qualification remain alive, but he must win his final Group I match, with his fate also hinging on the result between England’s Aidan Murphy and Poland’s Sebastian Milewski.
Youngster Xavier Rizzo and Chris Camilleri both suffered 3–0 defeats and are now mathematically eliminated from the competition. Rizzo lost to England’s Simon Blackwell, while Camilleri was beaten by 15-year-old Ukrainian Matvei Lagodzinschii. Rizzo has completed his group commitments after his final scheduled opponent withdrew, while Camilleri still has one match left to play.
The remaining group-stage matches involving Maltese players are scheduled as follows:
- 11:00 – Group C: Chris Camilleri vs Zhan Laushman (Bulgaria)
- 11:00 – Group AM: Alex Borg vs Steve Crowley (England)
- 13:00 – Group F: Joseph Casha vs Matei Unguru (Romania)
- 13:00 – Group I: Brian Cini vs Andrei Călin (Romania)
- 17:00 – Group X: Chris Peplow vs Steven Croker (England)
