Despite taking just a single point so far in their World Cup qualifying group, Sweden booked their place in the World Cup playoffs on Friday night—without even stepping onto the pitch.

Currently sitting at the bottom of their qualifying group, Sweden have nonetheless secured a playoff berth thanks to their triumph in Nations League Group C. Under the qualification rules, the four best Nations League group winners who fail to finish in the top two of their World Cup qualifying groups are awarded playoff spots.

Results elsewhere confirmed Sweden’s place. Croatia clinched their group victory on Friday, while Germany’s win over Luxembourg ensured that both Germany and the Czech Republic will finish no lower than second in their respective groups. Those outcomes guarantee Sweden’s Nations League path into the playoffs.

There remains a slim possibility that Sweden could still climb to second place in their qualifying group, which would earn them a more favorable playoff seeding than the one obtained via the Nations League route.

The qualification campaign itself has been deeply disappointing for Sweden. They have suffered two defeats to Kosovo and collected only one point from four matches. The poor run led to the dismissal of head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, with former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter brought in as his replacement.
