Foden nets dramatic winner as Man City hold off battling Leeds

Leeds United mounted a spirited second-half comeback from a 2–0 deficit, but they ultimately left the Etihad empty-handed, falling 3–2 to Manchester City after Phil Foden struck early and then again in stoppage time to settle a dramatic contest.
City, stung by recent defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen, set out to reassert themselves from the opening whistle. Barely 60 seconds had passed when Matheus Nunes picked out Foden inside the box, and the England international controlled smartly before rifling a crisp finish into the top corner to give the hosts a dream start.
For a Leeds side whose only away win this season had come against bottom-placed Wolves, conceding inside the first minute was a disastrous beginning. City monopolised possession throughout the early exchanges, and it appeared only a matter of time before the lead was doubled.
That moment arrived in the 25th minute. Leeds struggled to clear a Foden corner, allowing Joško Gvardiol to pounce on the loose ball and fire home the rebound—his first goal of the 2025/26 campaign, awarded after a brief VAR check. With memories resurfacing of City’s 7–0 thrashing of Leeds almost four years earlier, again sparked by an early Foden goal, home fans might have been forgiven for expecting a repeat. But Leeds held firm for the remainder of the half to avoid further damage.
Daniel Farke has previously faced criticism for being slow to change games from the bench, but his decision to replace Daniel James with Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the break proved inspired. Just four minutes into the second half, the substitute reacted quickest to a rebound and drilled a low shot inside the far post to halve the deficit.
Leeds grew in confidence, pushing City back for a spell, though the hosts’ recent habit of scoring during the middle period of home matches meant there was always a lingering threat of another gear to come. Yet the champions failed to reassert their control, and they were punished when Gvardiol brought down Calvert-Lewin in the box around the 75-minute mark.
Lukas Nmecha stepped up against his former club. Although Gianluigi Donnarumma saved his initial effort, the Leeds forward converted the rebound to bring the visitors level and send shockwaves around the Etihad. Suddenly Leeds had the momentum—and the possibility of ending City’s 25-match unbeaten run against newly promoted sides. Having handed City their last such defeat in April 2021, there was a sense of history waiting to repeat itself.
But the visitors’ hopes of snatching a point evaporated in the first minute of stoppage time. Foden, once again the difference-maker, collected a pass from Rayan Cherki on the edge of the box and fired a precise low strike beyond Donnarumma to restore City’s lead and seal the win.
While City escaped with all three points, they still face an uphill challenge as December approaches, potentially sitting seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Leeds, meanwhile, may find themselves three points from safety heading into the final month of 2025 despite their courageous display.
