EXCLUSIVE: Ukraine’s Sports Minister reflects on World Cup ambitions amid growing pressure

Ahead of Ukraine’s World Cup qualification play-off against Sweden, Flashscore spoke exclusively to the country’s Minister of Sport Matviy Bidnyi, who reflected on what a place at the tournament would mean for a nation still at war.
With Ukraine continuing to defend itself against a Russian invasion that has lasted more than four years, the national team has been forced to adapt, even relocating its base to Valencia in Spain.
“Even though we are playing in Spain, the entire nation will be behind our team,” Bidnyi said on Livesport Daily, the podcast of Flashscore’s Czech edition.
The Minister of Youth and Sports pointed to resilience as Ukraine’s defining strength. “I see it in all our athletes,” he explained. “When our Olympic team entered the stadium in Milano, everyone stood up and applauded. We experience that support everywhere we compete.”
He added that despite the difficult conditions under which Ukrainian athletes must prepare, they continue to deliver strong performances on the international stage. “People understand the challenges we face, but we keep competing and achieving important results,” Bidnyi said.
If Ukraine succeed in the play-offs, it would mark only their second-ever World Cup qualification, and the first since 2006. For fans living under the constant strain of conflict, it would be a moment of immense pride and joy.
“Football is hugely popular in our country. It means a lot to our fans, and the enthusiasm is enormous. Many people will be supporting our team, and expectations are high,” Bidnyi told Livesport Daily.
Yet the nationwide support also brings added pressure. “The players feel the support, but they also feel the responsibility,” he explained. “I speak with some of our athletes, and they say the pressure is tougher than ever. Our defenders see us, our nation sees us, and everyone is hoping for us. This is a special moment.”
Bidnyi highlighted the broader significance of Ukrainian athletes on the world stage, noting that their success serves as a powerful reminder of the country’s ongoing struggles.
“Our athletes are the best ambassadors for Ukraine,” he said. “There are countless examples of them raising global awareness about what’s happening in Ukraine, even among people who aren’t usually politically engaged. Sports provide a vital channel to share our story,” he concluded.
