Dortmund cruise past Union Berlin to close on Bayern

Borussia Dortmund closed the gap on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich to eight points with a convincing 3-0 victory over Union Berlin in the capital, extending their impressive league run to just one defeat in 19 matches this season.
The Stadion an der Alten Försterei has long been a difficult venue for visiting sides, with Union Berlin establishing a formidable home record since their promotion in 2019. Prior to this clash, Die Eisernen had won four of their six home league meetings with Dortmund. However, that resilience was tested early as the visitors made a strong start.
Dortmund took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes when Serhou Guirassy powered into the penalty area and was brought down by Frederik Rønnow. Although the Union goalkeeper managed to get a touch on the ball, it was insufficient to prevent a foul, and Emre Can calmly converted the resulting penalty.
The remainder of the first half was tightly contested, with both teams relying heavily on deliveries into the box to create chances. Union defended stubbornly, blocking several Dortmund efforts, while Fábio Silva came closest to extending the lead, firing narrowly wide after a crowded goalmouth scramble. At the other end, Diogo Leite headed over from close range in the hosts’ best opportunity.
Union attempted to impose a more physical approach after the break, but Dortmund responded with discipline and composure. Rønnow produced an excellent save to deny Jobe Bellingham from distance, yet he was unable to prevent the second goal moments later. From the resulting corner, Nico Schlotterbeck rose to head in from a tight angle, with the goalkeeper unfortunate to push the ball into his own net despite getting strong hands to it.
While Dortmund were not at their most flamboyant, they delivered a thoroughly professional display, neutralising Union’s threat and controlling the tempo of the match. Their dominance was reflected late on when Maximilian Beier added a third, drilling a precise finish into the bottom corner from a narrow angle.
The win followed Bayern Munich’s earlier defeat to Augsburg, giving Dortmund renewed hope in the title race. Head coach Niko Kovač may now believe his side can mount a genuine challenge, despite the significant points gap that remains.
For Union Berlin, the result ended a six-match unbeaten run, though they remain in the top half of the table as the weekend concludes.
