Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive pursuit of a maiden Australian Open title with a commanding performance on Sunday, defeating American Tommy Paul to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne.

The six-time Grand Slam champion sealed a 7-6(6), 6-4, 7-5 victory to match his best-ever run at the tournament and remains yet to drop a set in this year’s competition.

The Spanish top seed will next face either home favourite and sixth seed Alex de Minaur or Kazakhstan’s 10th seed Alexander Bublik for a place in the semi-finals.

At just 22, Alcaraz is bidding to make history by becoming the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam by winning all four major titles.

Reflecting on the contest, Alcaraz admitted he had to weather early pressure from his opponent.

“He started really strong, hitting powerful shots, and it was difficult at the beginning,” he said. “But I knew I would have my chances. Overall, it was a very high level from both of us, and I’m really happy to win in straight sets.”

Played in far cooler conditions than Saturday’s extreme heat, which had forced suspensions on outside courts, the match at Rod Laver Arena began with Paul making a fast start. The 19th seed broke Alcaraz in the opening game and surged into a surprise 3-1 lead.

Although Alcaraz initially missed two break-point opportunities, he found his rhythm in the eighth game, breaking back to level the opening set. The pair then moved into a tense tiebreak.

With the score finely balanced at 3-3, play was briefly halted for around 15 minutes due to a medical emergency in the crowd. The interruption appeared to disrupt Paul’s momentum, as he double-faulted soon after the restart, allowing Alcaraz to edge ahead and claim the set.

Buoyed by that success, Alcaraz carried his momentum into the second set, securing a crucial break that put him firmly in control of the match.

From there, the Spaniard maintained his dominance, sealing victory in two hours and 44 minutes to complete a confident straight-sets win.

One of the standout features of Alcaraz’s campaign has been his improved serve, which has become a key weapon throughout the tournament.

“In general, over these four matches, my serve has been really important,” he said. “Especially the first serve, it’s been very clean.”

His revamped serving technique has drawn comparisons to Novak Djokovic, with the Serbian joking in Melbourne that he deserves a share of Alcaraz’s prize money. The Spaniard has previously struggled with consistency on serve, but his recent improvements have underlined his growing maturity and all-round strength.
