Donyell Malen is making one of the most electrifying starts at AS Roma in recent memory. The Dutch forward has already matched the most prolific Giallorossi debuts of the last decade, and on Sunday against Napoli, he has the chance to set a new record and immediately solidify his impact in Rome.

A renewed sense of optimism has spread among Roma supporters and within Gian Piero Gasperini’s staff in recent weeks. After months of uncertainty and constant rotation in the attacking lineup, the team appears to have found a focal point: Donyell Malen.

Arriving on loan from Aston Villa during the January transfer window, with an obligation to buy under certain conditions, Malen has wasted no time making his mark. In a season where Artem Dovbyk and Evan Ferguson rotate without fully convincing, and Paulo Dybala often fills in as an emergency false nine, Malen provides much-needed clarity and consistency.

In his first four appearances for the Giallorossi, Malen has scored three goals — one against Torino and a decisive brace versus Cagliari. Only Diego Perotti in 2016 and Romelu Lukaku in 2023 achieved the same tally in their first four Roma matches.

Malen could set a new benchmark in Sunday’s clash at the intimidating Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. No Roma signing in the past decade has reached four goals in their first five games, and a strike from Malen would mark the club’s most productive debut run of the last ten years, raising expectations for his role this season.

This blistering start also ranks among the strongest openings of Malen’s career. Developed at the Arsenal academy but never breaking into the first team, he honed his skills at PSV Eindhoven, Borussia Dortmund, and Aston Villa, steadily refining both his technical and tactical game.

Statistically, his three goals in Rome match his previous best starts — the 2020/21 season with PSV and 2023/24 with Dortmund — suggesting he is approaching his most efficient form.

For both Malen and Roma, this strong, record-challenging introduction signals more than a temporary purple patch. It points to the emergence of a reliable attacking focal point, giving Gasperini a striker capable of transforming Roma’s offensive structure and driving the Giallorossi toward more ambitious objectives this season.
