Donnarumma dismisses claims of Italy players seeking World Cup bonuses

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma said he was disappointed by reports suggesting that members of the national team had asked for bonuses in the event of qualifying for this year’s World Cup.
The four-time champions Italy national football team failed to reach the tournament for a third straight time after a 4-1 penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in last month’s play-off final.
“As captain, I have never asked the national team for a single euro,” Donnarumma told Sky Sport Italia.
He explained that, as is customary, the federation typically rewards players who successfully qualify for major tournaments, but stressed that no such demands were made by the squad.
“That’s all it was,” he added. “Nobody requested anything from the federation—our real reward was the chance to play at the World Cup.”
Italy’s failure to qualify for the June 11 to July 19 World Cup in North America led to major changes, with Gabriele Gravina stepping down as president of the Italian Football Federation amid mounting pressure. Former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon also resigned from his role as the team’s delegation chief, while head coach Gennaro Gattuso departed his position.
“We have to start again and move forward,” said Gianluigi Donnarumma.
“We need to bounce back. There are still four years until the next World Cup, and before that we have major tournaments like the European Championship and the Nations League.
“Rather than focusing too far ahead, we must concentrate on these competitions and make a strong fresh start right away.”
