Denmark Dealt Severe Setback as Key Defender Faces Indefinite Absence

Danish international defender Joachim Mæhle of VfL Wolfsburg has been ruled out for an indefinite period after sustaining a serious shoulder injury during training.
The 28-year-old full-back suffered the injury in Wednesday’s training session, prompting an immediate hospital transfer by ambulance. Medical examinations have since confirmed that the damage is severe, though the Bundesliga club has not provided a timeline for his recovery.
Wolfsburg confirmed the news in an official statement on their website, expressing support for Mæhle during his rehabilitation period.
Mæhle has been a regular feature for Wolfsburg this season and a key player for the Danish national team. He played the full 90 minutes in three of Denmark’s four World Cup qualifiers this autumn.
His absence will be felt by both club and country, with Denmark’s next fixtures scheduled for mid-November against Belarus and Scotland.
Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are enduring a difficult spell. Under the guidance of sporting director Peter Christiansen, the club—featuring seven Danish players in its first-team squad—has managed only one win in its last nine matches and was eliminated from the DFB-Pokal earlier this week following a 1–0 defeat to Holstein Kiel.
