Balzan and Melita asserted their dominance at the top of the BOV Challenge League standings following Matchday 7 results. The Reds returned to the summit with a convincing win, sharing the top spot with Melita, who secured a vital three points to remain firm promotion contenders.

Balzan 4-0 Mtarfa

Balzan climbed back to the top of the standings after a comfortable 4-0 victory over a struggling Mtarfa side at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Andrew Cohen’s team dominated the match from the outset.

Gabriel Chiemezie opened the scoring just four minutes in with a superb lob over the goalkeeper. Jake Grech doubled the lead five minutes before the break with a precise strike from outside the area, and captain Samir Arab added a third from a corner action just seconds before halftime. Balzan capped off the commanding performance in the closing moments when Brazilian substitute Diego Caetano finished from close range.

Melita 3-1 Pieta’ Hotspurs

Melita bounced back from their recent defeat with a 3-1 victory over Pieta’ Hotspurs at the Centenary Stadium. All four goals arrived during a busy first half, with striker Jesus Andres Yepez increasing his season tally to eight goals, topping the league’s scoring charts.

Pieta’ took an early eighth-minute lead through Owen Magro, but Melita hit back instantly two minutes later when Kurt Bondin steered home a near-post corner. Quadri Allionida gave Melita a 2-1 lead on the half-hour mark, and a clever chip from Yepez on the stroke of halftime extended their advantage. Pieta’s hopes faded in the 77th minute when substitute Daneel Abela was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge.

Birzebbuga St Peter’s 2-1 Gudja United

Birzebbuga St Peter’s secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Gudja United at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. The Saints were the better team on the day but had to come from behind after Jamie Carbone put Gudja ahead in the 17th minute.

Alex Bruno quickly equalized for Birzebbuga from a Yusuf Sulaiman cross. Paul Lapira scored the winner on the hour mark, blasting home from the edge of the box after a neat attacking move. Gudja finished the match with ten men after Joseph Agbakwuru was expelled, and Birzebbuga also saw Hubert Vella receive his marching orders for a second bookable offense in stoppage time.

Vittoriosa Stars 2-3 Fgura United

Fgura United returned to winning ways with an entertaining 3-2 comeback victory over Vittoriosa Stars. Fgura scored the winner in stoppage time to keep pace with the early front-runners.

Fred Kessie put Vittoriosa ahead after 15 minutes. Fgura restored parity on the half-hour mark when Hidesato Ueda’s long-range effort took a deflection. Substitute Alan Abdel Rahman put Fgura ahead midway through the second half, only for Adrian Caruana to equalize for Vittoriosa in the 81st minute. Andrew Xuereb secured the valuable three points for Fgura with a winner in the dying moments.

St Andrews 0-4 Sirens

Sirens secured the surprise result of the weekend with an emphatic 4-0 victory over St Andrews (Luxol) at the Centenary Stadium. The team, coached by Steve D’Amato, rose to fifth place in the rankings with their second consecutive victory.

The deadlock was broken in the 37th minute when Hafiz Akadom drilled home from close range after a corner. Akadom scored his second shortly after the restart, and Thiago Nonato converted a penalty five minutes later to seal a dominant performance.

Marsa 2-3 Mgarr United

In the first Saturday kick-off at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Mġarr United defeated Marsa 3-2 in a game that Marsa arguably should not have lost. Coach Ryan Fenech’s side wasted numerous opportunities and were punished for their profligacy just minutes before the final whistle when Mġarr scored the decisive goal. Southern Sudanese striker Dor Jok had an excellent game but missed several clear-cut chances for Marsa.

Marsa started perfectly, with Brazilian left winger David Versiani scoring from the edge of the area after indecisive Mġarr defending in the second minute. Dor Jok continued to threaten but missed several opportunities throughout the first half. Against the run of play on 37 minutes, Mġarr equalised when Ivin Farrugia scored from close range following sloppy Marsa defending.

Seven minutes after the break, Farrugia found the net again for Mġarr with an excellent shot via the crossbar. However, Jok balanced the game for Marsa on 56 minutes, beating the off-side trap and shooting low past goalkeeper Jonathan Debono to make it 2-2. Jok went on to miss more chances to put Marsa ahead.

Mġarr scored the winner deep into stoppage time when Terence Vella headed home a free-kick from close range. Tempers flared after the full-time whistle, resulting in red cards for Mġarr’s Jonathan Bajada and Marsa official Melvin Borg.

Santa Lucia 1-3 Swieqi United

The Saturday Challenge League program was concluded by the match between Santa Lucia and Swieqi United, with the latter recording their second consecutive league victory. Santa Lucia, sitting on just eight points, needs to be careful not to be dragged into the relegation battle.

Swieqi scored early in the second minute when goalkeeper Maverick Buhagiar miscalculated a Samuel Okoh corner, allowing Daniel Agius to tap home. Swieqi doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when Emmanuel Asante released an unstoppable grounder from the edge of the area. Five minutes after halftime, Asante collected his brace with a simple rebound goal after Okoh’s effort hit the post.

The Saints pulled one back in the 70th minute when captain Matthias Vella headed into the net from a short corner routine. Santa Lucia pushed for more goals, with Swieqi goalkeeper Jean Claude Debattista making a key save late on, but it was Swieqi substitute Olalekan Obajopi who hit the post in stoppage time during a swift counter-attack to end an entertaining match.

The match between Żebbuġ Rangers and Żurrieq from this Match Day has been postponed to Wednesday, 17 December, due to Żebbuġ’s Jubilee Cup commitments.
