Bologna overturned an early deficit to defeat Celta Vigo 2–1, climbing above the Spanish side in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) league-phase standings and extending their unbeaten European run to five matches (W3, D2).

The visitors settled more confidently in the opening exchanges. Federico Bernardeschi tested Ionuț Radu with a speculative effort from distance, and Juan Miranda delivered a teasing cross that narrowly evaded Santiago Castro’s leap at the far post.

Miranda then flirted with disciplinary trouble when he appeared to push Borja Iglesias in the face while contesting possession, and it was down his flank that Celta struck first in the 17th minute. A quick free-kick released Sergio Carreira, who linked with Williot Swedberg—the standout in last weekend’s shock win at Real Madrid. Swedberg muscled past Charalampos Lykogiannis and slipped a composed pass across goal for Bryan Zaragoza to finish.

Celta’s advantage was nearly wiped out within minutes. Carl Starfelt’s underhit back-pass invited pressure from Jonathan Rowe, but the Bologna winger stretched and steered the ball just wide. Castro then had a pair of opportunities as the Italians pushed for parity, though Bologna were fortunate themselves when goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia gifted Swedberg possession, only for the winger to lose his footing on the slick surface.

Castro threatened again before halftime, forcing Radu to slide out and smother his attempt. Zaragoza did not emerge for the second half, replaced by Hugo Álvarez after appearing to pick up an injury.

Bernardeschi, increasingly influential, thought he had created the equaliser shortly before the hour mark when he glided past Óscar Mingueza and squared for Tommaso Pobega to score—only for the Italian to be ruled offside.

Moments later, chaos ensued. Pobega went down in the box, initially judged offside. VAR intervened, confirming the midfielder was onside and had indeed been fouled by Javi Rodríguez. Bernardeschi stepped up and dispatched the resulting penalty with confidence to level the match.

Celta coach Claudio Giráldez responded with a triple substitution, but it immediately backfired. One of the entrants, Iago Aspas, played an errant pass straight to Nicolò Cambiaghi, who quickly fed Bernardeschi. The winger surged into the area and squeezed a low shot beyond Radu to complete Bologna’s turnaround.

The visitors managed the closing stages effectively, holding firm to secure consecutive away wins in major European competition for the first time since November 1998. The result lifts Bologna to 13th place and into the seeded positions for the knockout-phase play-offs.
