Bayern Munich fend off Real Madrid to secure deserved first-leg quarter-final victory

Bayern Munich secured a thrilling 2-1 victory away to Real Madrid, the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners, in the first leg of their blockbuster quarter-final, putting the German side in a strong position to reach the semi-finals for the 22nd time.
Blending modern intensity with historic significance, the Santiago Bernabéu set the stage for a clash between two of the competition’s most successful teams at this stage. The opening half delivered on expectations, with both sides displaying exceptional quality from the outset.
Bayern started brightly and came close early on, only for Dayot Upamecano to miscue his effort from close range after being set up by Harry Kane’s header.
Real Madrid soon responded by exploiting their pace on the break, forcing Manuel Neuer into action as he denied Kylian Mbappé following a clever through ball from Arda Güler. The veteran goalkeeper continued to impress, producing another fine save from Mbappé before making an outstanding diving stop to keep out a powerful strike from Vinícius Júnior.
Despite Madrid’s chances, Bayern made their pressure count late in the first half. A slick attacking move sliced through the home defence, with Serge Gnabry delivering a precise through ball that allowed Luis Díaz to calmly finish and silence the crowd.
The visitors struck again almost immediately after the restart. Within moments of the second half kicking off, Michael Olise weaved his way forward before setting up Harry Kane, who fired past Andriy Lunin from the edge of the box to double Bayern’s lead.
Andriy Lunin managed to deny Michael Olise twice as Bayern pushed for a third, but Real Madrid gradually began to grow into the game.
The hosts were handed a golden opportunity when Dayot Upamecano’s poor clearance fell kindly to Vinícius Júnior, though the Brazilian couldn’t convert after rounding Manuel Neuer. Moments later, Kylian Mbappé came close as well, curling an effort narrowly wide of the post.
Madrid’s increasing pressure eventually paid off with 15 minutes remaining. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a low cross to the far post, where Mbappé was on hand to finish, with the ball just crossing the line despite Neuer’s desperate attempt to keep it out.
Los Blancos continued to press for an equaliser, creating further chances in the closing stages, but were ultimately unable to avoid only their second defeat in nine head-to-head meetings with Bayern.
Goals either side of half-time have put Bayern firmly in control of the tie, and they now look strong contenders to chase a seventh UEFA Champions League crown.
