Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski said he will “remember forever” scoring the first goal at the newly rebuilt Camp Nou after his side defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-0 on Saturday in LaLiga.

The veteran forward opened the scoring just four minutes into the match, setting the tone for Barcelona’s long-awaited return to their home stadium after two-and-a-half years away.

Originally, the club had planned to reopen Camp Nou a year ago, but the date was delayed multiple times due to construction challenges and other issues.

“Today was a special day, not only for me but for everyone,” Lewandowski told Barca One. “I’m very happy I could score the first goal coming back to Camp Nou. I have so much experience playing in different stadiums, but here it’s something truly special. I’m very proud of myself and the team—we did a great job today and secured the win. I think this first goal is something I’ll remember forever.”

The victory also brought Barcelona level on points with Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga, marking a boost in form for the team.

“I already felt a few days ago, when I returned from the national team, that special emotions were coming—that something extraordinary was going to happen,” Lewandowski added. “We all know this game is going to be remembered for a long time.”

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick praised the former Bayern Munich striker’s contribution.

“He’s a player who, when given a chance, nearly always scores,” Flick told reporters. “It was very important for us to score early today because it gave the team the confidence we needed.”

Approximately 45,000 fans filled the three open stands at Camp Nou, with the third tier still under construction. The stadium’s full renovation is now expected to be completed in 2027, a year later than initially planned.
