Balzan extend lead at the summit with convincing win over Birżebbuġa in BOV Challenge League

Balzan tightened their grip on top spot in the BOV Challenge League after a convincing 3–0 victory over closest rivals Birżebbuġa St Peter’s in Sunday’s headline clash at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
The league leaders broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when Oluwatobiloba Dimeji Awosanya calmly converted a penalty. Balzan doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark, with Gabriel Santos also finding the net from the spot on 58 minutes, before Stephen Gabriel Chiemezie wrapped up the points with a third goal on 72 minutes. The win sees Balzan move four points clear at the summit.
Elsewhere, Melita were forced to settle for a 2–2 draw against Santa Lucia at the Centenary Stadium. Adrian Borg put Santa Lucia ahead on 35 minutes, and although Andreas Vella drew Melita level on 76 minutes, Filip Petkovski restored Santa Lucia’s lead five minutes later. Melita salvaged a point in dramatic fashion when Quadri Olanshile Allionida struck one minute from time.
Sirens produced one of the performances of the day with an emphatic 5–1 win over Fgura United at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, inspired by a four-goal haul from Thiago Nonato. Nonato opened the scoring on five minutes, and after Timilehin Caleb Akande equalised for Fgura on 15 minutes, the Brazilian took over the match, scoring again on 57 minutes, converting a penalty on 70 minutes and completing his quartet on 84 minutes. Hafiz Mohammed Akadom added a fifth goal two minutes from time.
Żurrieq and Mġarr United shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw at the Victor Tedesco Stadium. Mġarr took the lead early in the second half through Matthias Fenech on 47 minutes, but Jonathan Monney rescued a point for Żurrieq seven minutes from time.
A six-goal thriller unfolded at the Centenary Stadium as St Andrews and Vittoriosa Stars drew 3–3. Cauã put St Andrews ahead on 12 minutes before Mattia Galliano doubled their lead on 27 minutes. Vittoriosa fought back after the break, with Shaun Carabott pulling one back on 54 minutes and Samuel Boakye levelling on 69 minutes. Cauã restored St Andrews’ lead from the penalty spot five minutes later, but Vittoriosa snatched a point deep into stoppage time thanks to an equaliser by Isaiah Micallef.
At the top of the standings, Balzan lead with 32 points, followed by Birżebbuġa on 28 and Melita on 26. Sirens and Swieqi are next on 23 points, ahead of Fgura on 22, Mġarr and Gudja on 21, St Andrews on 20 and Pietà’ on 18. Santa Lucia have 15 points, Żurrieq 14, Vittoriosa 11, Marsa 7, Żebbuġ 5 and Mtarfa remain on -2.
