Jannik Sinner Kicks Off Australian Open Title Defense as Hugo Gaston Retires

Jannik Sinner began his pursuit of a third consecutive Australian Open crown in commanding fashion on Tuesday, taking a 6-2, 6-1 lead before France’s Hugo Gaston retired, much to the disappointment of the Rod Laver Arena crowd.

The world number two, playing his first competitive match since defeating Carlos Alcaraz to win the ATP Finals over two months ago, racked up 19 winners in just over an hour, showcasing the dominance he’s displayed at Melbourne Park over the past two years.

Gaston appeared unwell after the first set, taking tablets, and eventually crossed to Sinner’s side after the second set to shake hands and apologize before leaving the court. Sinner offered consolation as the Frenchman sat under a towel, visibly upset.

“I could see Hugo wasn’t at his best, but I’m very happy with my own performance,” Sinner said. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work in the off-season, but the most important thing is to go on court and enjoy it. It’s very special to start the season in a night-session Grand Slam match with a packed stadium.”

Sinner’s start was nearly flawless. After falling 0-40 in his opening service game, he hit three aces in four points to erase the early deficit. A break in the sixth game of the first set set the tone for the rest of the match, which Gaston could not continue.

Though Sinner fell short against arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final, he has used the off-season to add variety to his game. Against Gaston, the Italian’s mix of angled drop shots highlighted his evolving tactics.

“I’ve also been working on my serve, adjusting my ball toss and slowing down my action. It’s still a work in progress, but we’re improving,” Sinner added.

Next up for the reigning Australian Open champion is Australia’s James Duckworth, with a place in the third round at stake.
