Atletico secure deal with Atalanta for Lookman signing

Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Nigeria international Ademola Lookman, the Spanish club confirmed on Sunday.
In a statement on their official website, Atletico revealed that the forward has already arrived in Madrid to complete his medical examination and finalise the terms of his contract.
While the club did not disclose details regarding the transfer fee or contract length, Spanish media reports suggest the deal is worth around €35 million.
The 28-year-old has been in impressive form since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, scoring 55 goals in all competitions. His most memorable performance came in the 2024 Europa League final, where he netted a hat-trick in a historic victory over Bayer Leverkusen. The triumph secured Atalanta’s first European title and ended Leverkusen’s remarkable 51-match unbeaten run.
That performance also saw Lookman become just the sixth player in history to score three goals in a European club final, and the first to do so since 1975.
Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic in 2015 before earning a move to Everton two years later. Although he scored on his Premier League debut, he struggled for regular playing time and was loaned to RB Leipzig in 2018.
After an encouraging spell in Germany, he joined Leipzig permanently in 2019 for £22.5 million. However, limited opportunities led to further loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City, before he revitalised his career with a move to Atalanta.
Now under the guidance of Diego Simeone, Lookman arrives at Atletico as a key addition to strengthen the squad. The club currently sit third in LaLiga with 45 points, 10 behind leaders Barcelona.
Atletico will be hoping the Nigerian forward’s attacking threat can boost their campaign as they prepare for a two-legged Champions League knockout play-off against Club Brugge later this month.
