Arsenal and Juventus lead chase for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali

Sandro Tonali’s next move is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing stories of the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Newcastle United midfielder was briefly linked with Arsenal in the January window, sparking speculation—even if a move was never realistically on the cards at that time. Now, attention is turning to whether that interest was a one-off or the first indication that Tonali could become a genuine transfer target.
From Newcastle’s perspective, the message is clear: Tonali is central to their project. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed he had spoken directly with the midfielder following the Arsenal links, emphasizing that Tonali remains fully focused on Newcastle’s immediate goals.
Tonali has started the majority of Premier League games this season and has made no attempts to push for a move. Yet the Arsenal story wasn’t entirely baseless. Sources indicate quiet discussions took place behind the scenes, not because Tonali is unhappy at Newcastle, but as part of broader planning for his future.
Insiders suggest the midfielder and his family would ideally like to return to Italy at some point, even if that preference hasn’t yet translated into an active desire to leave. That potential openness is one reason Juventus are keeping a close eye on him.
Juventus Eye Tonali as Key Signing
While recent headlines have focused on Arsenal, Juventus see Tonali as their top midfield target for next season. The Italian side has tracked him since his move to Newcastle and considers him a player around whom they could rebuild their squad. Within the club, Tonali is viewed as a fundamental acquisition rather than a luxury addition.
If he becomes available in the summer, Juventus know the challenge is likely financial rather than sporting. Newcastle reportedly value Tonali at around €90–100 million, reflecting both his importance to the team and his status as one of Italy’s premier midfielders. Juventus, by contrast, are expected to have a single-signing budget of €50–60 million, and matching or improving on Tonali’s current Newcastle salary would stretch their wage structure.
For Premier League clubs, the financial gap is less of an obstacle. Arsenal’s brief interest in January highlighted this disparity, and Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United have all been linked with Tonali, all capable of offering higher wages than Juventus.
That leaves Juventus relying on factors beyond money: Tonali’s affinity for Italian football, his history in Serie A with AC Milan, and the promise of a central role at one of Italy’s biggest clubs could all work in their favor. AC Milan, Tonali’s former club, also cannot be discounted as a potential suitor.
Newcastle Remain Calm
For now, Newcastle are projecting a calm and confident stance, but that approach will face tests over the coming months. Juventus are expected to push, Arsenal could re-enter the fray, and Premier League rivals remain in the background.
Ultimately, whether sentiment and personal preference can bridge the financial gap may determine where Tonali plays next season.
