Alcino header sends Sliema back to winning ways
Earlier at the Centenary Stadium, Sliema Wanderers returned to winning form with a narrow 1–0 success over Mosta, keeping their Top 6 ambitions alive.
Eager to bounce back after a disappointing run of results, the Wanderers made a positive start and took the lead after 22 minutes. Roko Prša’s corner was met by Gustavo Alcino, who headed past goalkeeper David Akpan to give Sliema a deserved advantage.
Mosta had a golden opportunity to equalise on 34 minutes when the ball fell kindly to Emmanuel Prince from a corner situation, but the forward inexplicably fired over from close range.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with chances scarce. Sliema went close to doubling their lead on 74 minutes when Mohamed Awad’s effort was turned behind by Akpan.
Mosta came agonisingly close to salvaging a point late on, as Giancarlo Goncalves saw his volley crash against the upright five minutes from time. However, Sliema held firm to claim all three points and move back into contention in the standings.
