Ajax Seek Win Against Benfica in Clash of Champions League Strugglers

Ajax Amsterdam are hoping that a home victory against Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday can spark a turnaround in a season that has raised serious concerns.
The Dutch giants, who dismissed coach John Heitinga earlier this month, share with Benfica the unwanted distinction of having lost all four of their group matches this season. Both clubs, with rich histories in European competition, currently occupy the bottom spots in their group of 36 teams.
Domestically, Ajax are also struggling. They head into Tuesday’s clash at the Johan Cruyff Arena following a historic 1-0 defeat to Excelsior Rotterdam on Saturday—their first ever home loss to the club—which dropped them to sixth in the Eredivisie, 14 points adrift of league leaders PSV.
The team has managed just one point from their last three home league games, marking their lowest three-game tally at the Johan Cruyff Arena since 1975. Overall, Ajax have suffered 14 defeats in the calendar year, the most in a single year since 1964, when they lost 17 matches.
“A lot has to do with confidence. When things are going well, everything seems to flow naturally,” interim coach Fred Grim said at Monday’s press conference. “We’re looking to build confidence, and you do that by winning games. The stakes are high—we want to erase the dreadful zero points on our Champions League record.”
Grim refused to concede that Ajax’s chances of reaching the knockout stages were over despite their poor start, appealing to fans for support. “Anything is still possible. We need the fans desperately. I hope we can have a good old-fashioned Champions League night.”
The club has confirmed that Grim will remain in charge until at least the winter break. Meanwhile, Ajax are prioritizing the appointment of a new technical director, with Dutch media reporting that talks have begun with Jordi Cruyff.
