A Year of Triumph and Turning Points: MAFA’s Defining Moments in 2025

The year 2025 will be remembered as a landmark season for the Malta Amateur Football Association (MAFA), defined by decisive league triumphs, closely fought cup finals and milestone fixtures that helped shape the domestic amateur football landscape.
The standout moment of the campaign arrived in May 2025, when Għaxaq Wolves were officially crowned MAFA First Division champions. Their title was mathematically confirmed after nearest challengers Marsa St Michael were beaten by Balluta Barracudas, ending any remaining hopes of a late challenge. Għaxaq’s consistency across the season proved decisive, allowing them to clinch the championship with games still in hand.
Later that month, focus shifted to the MAFA Knock-Out competition, where Marsa St Michael lifted the trophy following a narrow 1–0 victory over Second Division outfit Attard Edex Kings. The final was settled inside the opening minutes, with Lamin Jaiteh heading home after just three minutes. Marsa goalkeeper Alvarez Rojas played a key role with a series of vital saves, while the defence stood firm to repel late pressure. Captain Nikola Neskovic was presented with the trophy by MFA Vice-President Matthew Paris, bringing the Knock-Out campaign to a close.
The 2025/26 MAFA season kicked off in emphatic style in September with the Joe Compagno Cup, the traditional season opener. Knock-Out holders Marsa St Michael delivered a commanding performance, defeating league champions Għaxaq Wolves 7–2. Yuya Emura stole the spotlight with a hat-trick, while Coutinho Junior Joao Marcello also netted three goals. A brief response from Da Silva Hugo Vinicius offered little respite for Għaxaq, as Marsa’s attacking quality proved overwhelming. The trophy was presented by MFA General Secretary Dr Maria Azzopardi to captain Nikola Neskovic.
Fair play also took centre stage as Senglea Gunners FC captured the Twanny Agius Fair Play Cup following a short tournament at the Qormi Ground. The competition featured 35-minute matches, with Ta’ Giorni Wanderers opening proceedings by defeating Naxxar Victorians 2–0. Senglea Gunners then secured the trophy with a 2–0 win over Ta’ Giorni, striking twice late on through Bonello Emerson and Christopher Philip Balotelli.
September also brought action in the Jubilee Cup, where the MAFA Selection exited the competition after a 3–1 defeat to the Malta Veterans. MAFA took an early lead through Chijioke Moses Nwankwo, but goals from Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza, Thomas Paris and Andrew Cohen turned the match in favour of the former internationals.
The year concluded in dramatic fashion in December 2025, as Senglea Gunners lifted the BOV MAFA 70th Anniversary Cup after overcoming Għaxaq Wolves on penalties at the Marsaxlokk Ground. The final finished 1–1 after normal and extra time, with Lamin Jaiteh giving Senglea the lead before Diego Fernando Pereira equalised for Għaxaq. In the penalty shoot-out, Senglea prevailed 4–2, with successful efforts from George Frendo, Lamin Jaiteh and Joshua Goku. The trophy was presented by BOV Chief Executive Ernest Agius to captain Stephane Moto Bitseki, in the presence of senior MAFA and MFA officials.
From league dominance to cup success, 2025 stood out as a year filled with defining moments for MAFA, highlighting the competitiveness, resilience and continued growth of amateur football in Malta.
