Defensive stalemate at the top as Senglea and Second Division strugglers taste victory

The weekend’s headline encounter in the MAFA First Division championship ended in a tense goalless draw, as Valletta St Paul’s and Għaxaq Wolves cancelled each other out in a match dominated by defensive discipline.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium, with both backlines firmly on top throughout. The standout performers were the two goalkeepers, Jianiro Camilleri for Valletta St Paul’s and Alejandro Pineres for Għaxaq Wolves, who dealt confidently with the limited threats that came their way. The 0–0 result sees Għaxaq Wolves maintain their position at the summit of the table on 13 points, while Valletta St Paul’s now trail the leaders by five points. The match was officiated by referee Milos Krstic.

Meanwhile, Senglea Gunners continued their impressive run of form following their success in the 70th Anniversary Cup, edging out Valletta Stars St Dominic 1–0. In a contest between two sides promoted last season, the decisive moment arrived in the 23rd minute when George Frendo calmly converted a penalty to secure all three points for Senglea. Referee duties were handled by Peter Abela.
In the Second Division, the teams struggling at the foot of the table finally broke their duck with important first wins of the season. Mqabba Albions climbed off the bottom after claiming a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Ħamrun Sporting. Vaner Keskin struck the crucial goal in the 58th minute to hand Mqabba three valuable points, with Onur Arslan overseeing proceedings as referee.
Ta’ Ġiorni Wanderers also celebrated their first win, defeating Birżebbuġa St Peter’s 3–1. The match saw Birżebbuġa take the lead when Yassine Bouslimi capitalised on an own goal by Jeremy Grixti, levelling matters for Ta’ Ġiorni. Momentum swung firmly in Ta’ Ġiorni’s favour thereafter, with Daniel Neeraj Bharwani scoring twice, including the decisive goal in the 51st minute, to seal the victory. Gjorgji Bitri was the referee.

Rounding off the weekend’s action, St Paul’s Bay NMFC recorded a narrow 1–0 win over Naxxar Victorians. Once again, prolific striker Bishal Khawash proved the difference, scoring the match-winning goal in a tightly contested encounter refereed by Alex Grech.
