Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been released from hospital after surviving a car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, state officials confirmed Wednesday.

The crash occurred on Monday when Joshua was traveling with friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele on a busy highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan in southwest Nigeria. Their SUV collided with a stationary truck. Joshua sustained only minor injuries, according to the Nigerian police.

Preliminary investigations by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun state suggested the vehicle was speeding and had suffered a tyre blowout prior to the collision.

“Anthony Joshua was discharged from hospital late this afternoon,” a joint statement from Lagos and Ogun state governments said Wednesday night. “Though heavy-hearted over the loss of his two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to continue recovery at home.”

Both state governments have been overseeing Joshua’s treatment since the accident. After leaving the hospital, Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited the funeral home where the bodies of Ghami and Ayodele were being prepared for repatriation. Nigerian police confirmed both men died at the scene.

Ghami, Joshua’s longtime strength and conditioning coach, and Ayodele, his personal trainer, were close members of his team, British media reported.

According to Nigerian newspaper The Guardian, the driver of the SUV has also been discharged from hospital and is being questioned by police. The driver “could face prosecution for reckless driving,” the report said, though no further details were provided.

Joshua, 36, was treated at Lagoon Hospital in Lagos, correcting earlier reports that named a different facility. A British national with family roots in southwest Nigeria, Joshua often visits the area. Police released images of the mangled SUV following the crash.

In December, Joshua scored a knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed bout in Miami. The former Olympic champion has also been linked to a potential fight against fellow Briton and former world champion Tyson Fury.

Joshua’s previous fight before facing Paul was a fifth-round knockout loss to fellow Briton Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
