The driver of the car carrying British boxer Anthony Joshua in a fatal crash in Nigeria has been taken into police custody following his release from the hospital, a police spokesman confirmed to AFP on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV transporting Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, collided with a stationary truck on a busy highway connecting Lagos and Ibadan in southwest Nigeria.

Authorities confirmed that Ayodele and Ghami were killed at the scene, while Joshua and the driver sustained only minor injuries.

Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesman for Ogun State Police, said: “The driver is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident. Investigations are ongoing.” When asked whether the driver would face prosecution, he added that the “investigation remains discreet for now.”

Preliminary findings from the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) indicated that the vehicle was traveling at excessive speed and suffered a tyre blowout prior to the crash.

Following his hospital discharge on Wednesday, Joshua and his mother visited the funeral home where the bodies of his friends were being prepared for repatriation. A government source told AFP on Thursday that the victims’ remains may have been returned to the United Kingdom.
