World number one Aryna Sabalenka and Australian Nick Kyrgios say they are excited about the unpredictability of their upcoming “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match on Sunday, an event that has sparked debate in the tennis world.

The contest, which pits four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka against former world number 13 Kyrgios at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena, is largely seen as entertainment. Critics, however, argue that it risks trivializing women’s tennis and the decades-long fight for equality.

Both players, though, are focusing on the challenge rather than the controversy.

“This event is really unpredictable, and I don’t know what to expect,” Sabalenka told reporters on Saturday.

“That’s what I love because this is the feeling you chase in sport—the unpredictability. Playing Nick, who is unpredictable and wild, is a huge challenge for me. It’s great training, and I hope girls watching will see how strong and brave I am to take this on.”

The match draws inspiration from the iconic 1973 “Battle of the Sexes,” when Billie Jean King defeated 55-year-old former Grand Slam champion Bobby Riggs, who had claimed women’s tennis was inferior. King recently told the BBC that while the Dubai match carries the same banner, it does not hold the same societal stakes as her historic clash.

Sabalenka agreed, noting the differences in purpose.

“They were fighting for social change. We’re here to bring tennis to another level and shine a spotlight on our sport,” she said.

“Women have already proven we deserve equality. Tomorrow, I’ll just show that we can put up a great fight against a man—and have fun doing it.”

Kyrgios echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the value of collaboration over division.

“There’s too much fighting and not enough teamwork,” he said. “Regardless of the outcome—I do want to win—it’s about showing we can do incredible things together in sport.”

Unlike Riggs, who had retired from professional tennis, Kyrgios is still an active ATP player. However, his career has been hindered by injuries, limiting him to just five singles matches in 2025.

The exhibition will follow modified rules: one serve per player, a slightly smaller court for Sabalenka, and a 10-point tiebreak if the match reaches a decider.

“Even though the court is shorter, he won’t hold back on his shots, and I’ll stay in attacking mode,” Sabalenka explained.

“That’s my power—my game and my strength. I also have the touch to do fun things and make the match exciting.”

The showdown promises to be a blend of entertainment, skill, and unpredictability—a modern twist on a historic rivalry that continues to capture imaginations.
