Former Ivory Coast and Montpellier coach Jean-Louis Gasset dies

Jean-Louis Gasset, the veteran French coach who was dismissed by the Ivory Coast during the last Africa Cup of Nations before the team went on to win the trophy, has passed away at the age of 72, Montpellier announced on Friday.
Gasset’s tenure with the Ivory Coast ended in dramatic fashion after the hosts suffered a stunning 4-0 defeat to minnows Equatorial Guinea in their final group-stage match at the 2023 tournament, marking one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history. The loss left Ivory Coast third in their group.
Despite his dismissal, the Ivorians advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and ultimately lifted the trophy under Gasset’s assistant, Emerse Fae.
Shortly after returning to France, Gasset was appointed head coach of Olympique de Marseille, a role he held for just four months. He returned to Montpellier last season, but was sacked in April as the team faced relegation.
Gasset had deep ties to Montpellier, where he spent most of his playing career and where his father was one of the club’s founders.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
