Tottenham keep tabs on Brighton pair Verbruggen and Van Hecke

Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring two Brighton standouts as they shape their long-term transfer strategy, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke both emerging as potential targets ahead of the 2026 transfer windows.
Spurs’ forward planning is already in motion, with senior figures at the club laying the groundwork for significant investment aimed at raising both ambition and expectations. While sources continue to stress that strengthening the attack remains a priority — with Antoine Semenyo viewed as an ideal addition — Tottenham have also begun assessing their options in goal over recent months.
Uncertainty is growing around Guglielmo Vicario’s long-term future. Although the club had initially been considering adding competition for the Italian, a series of costly errors has further fuelled doubts over his position as undisputed No.1. Speculation has linked Vicario with a potential return to Italy, with Inter Milan and AC Milan both mentioned as possible destinations.
Sources have now confirmed that Verbruggen is among the leading candidates on Tottenham’s shortlist should they decide to make a change.
The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dependable goalkeepers and is viewed internally as someone capable of developing into a world-class performer. Manchester City monitored him closely last summer, while Chelsea have also tracked his progress.
With Verbruggen under contract until 2028, Brighton are aware that next summer — when he will enter the final two years of his deal — could be the optimal time to secure maximum value, even though they would prefer to retain him. However, sources acknowledge that a January move would be extremely difficult for Tottenham to execute.
Tottenham’s interest in Brighton does not stop at the goalkeeper position. Centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has also been identified as a serious option as Spurs explore ways to reinforce their defence.
Liverpool have previously registered interest as they plan a refresh of their back line, but Tottenham are understood to be particularly determined suitors. Van Hecke’s consistency has been impossible to overlook — he has played every minute of Brighton’s Premier League campaign this season and is regarded internally as a future leader.
Brighton are no strangers to this level of attention, and while the growing interest presents challenges, their track record suggests they will either resist offers or demand a premium fee when the time is right.
For Tottenham, the monitoring of Verbruggen and Van Hecke underlines a clear intent to be bold in the market and focus on proven Premier League talent as they plan for the future.
