Manchester United are seeking to understand the reasoning behind Bruno Fernandes’ recent media outburst.

The Portuguese midfielder’s controversial comments, published on Tuesday in the Portuguese press, have raised fresh questions about his future at Old Trafford.

Some sources suggest Fernandes may be considering a transfer after criticizing the club during an interview with Canal 11. United officials are reportedly eager to learn why he made such statements.

In the interview, Fernandes discussed loyalty and the perception of players over the age of 30, revealing that he could have moved to Saudi Arabia for “much more money.” He said a conversation with Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim persuaded him to stay at Manchester United. However, he felt the club’s attitude was: “If you go, it’s not that bad for us.” Fernandes added that this stance hurt him and claimed, “for them, money is more important than anything.”

By suggesting that United were willing to sell him to Saudi club Al Hilal, Fernandes has reportedly angered club officials. Some insiders have even compared his remarks to Mohamed Salah’s recent criticisms of Liverpool.

Manchester United insist they never planned to sell Fernandes and continue to view him as part of the club’s future. Nevertheless, the comments raise questions about whether Fernandes himself is considering a move.

Internal discussions are expected, with a renewed focus on the club’s midfield and long-term rebuilding plans. According to Flashscore, United already plan to sign two midfielders in 2026 but are struggling to secure their top targets. Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba have been identified as players of interest, though alternative options are also being explored.

Fernandes, 31, is the club captain, and there had been an expectation that he would continue into the 2025/26 season. However, sources indicate that Manchester United have started planning for life after the Portuguese international. Angelo Stiller has emerged as a potential Fernandes replacement, with scouting reports already in place.

Consideration has also been given to Kobbie Mainoo stepping into a starting role, but his desire to leave the club complicates the situation. With the futures of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte also uncertain, Manchester United face a challenging period at Old Trafford.

The club aims to resolve the Fernandes situation quickly while moving forward with their transfer plans as a matter of urgency.
