Resilient Real Betis deny Rayo Vallecano a long-overdue win

Rayo Vallecano’s wait for a LaLiga victory stretched back to the end of October (D4, L2) after they were held to a frustrating 0–0 draw by Real Betis at the Estadio de Vallecas.
Despite their recent struggles in front of goal — having scored just once in their previous five league outings — Rayo started brightly and needed only five minutes to test Álvaro Valles. A driving run from Andrei Rațiu carried him deep into Betis territory, forcing the visiting goalkeeper into a sharp save to deny the right-back’s dipping effort.
Buoyed by early momentum, the hosts were dealt an untimely setback midway through the first half when top scorer Jorge de Frutos was forced off with what appeared to be a painful injury. Given Rayo’s existing scoring woes, his departure felt particularly damaging.
Nevertheless, the Franjirrojos continued to press and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock after 28 minutes. Valles produced a remarkable double save, first parrying Florian Lejeune’s powerful free-kick before stretching to get a fingertip to Isi Palazón’s rebound and keep the scores level.
Those interventions proved crucial, as Betis offered little attacking threat before the interval and rarely troubled Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, heading into half-time still locked at 0–0.
Manuel Pellegrini’s half-time team talk appeared to spark a response from the visitors, who emerged with renewed attacking intent. Just four minutes after the restart, Aitor Ruibal unleashed a fierce long-range strike that Batalla expertly turned away.
Rayo gradually regained their attacking rhythm, with Palazón glancing a header narrowly wide shortly after the hour mark. The winger went even closer 10 minutes later when his goalbound effort beat Valles but struck the right-hand post, ultimately proving to be the closest either side came to scoring.
The stalemate leaves Real Betis in sixth place in the LaLiga table, two points clear of Athletic Club as they cling to the final European qualification spot.
For Rayo Vallecano, the draw does little to ease concerns. They remain stuck in the crowded bottom half of the table, seven points behind Betis and just three clear of the relegation zone, having managed only four wins from 16 league matches this season.
