Benfica claimed a commanding 2–0 victory over Antonio Conte’s Napoli in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), with José Mourinho’s side scoring a goal in each half to secure what is only the Portuguese manager’s third win in eight encounters with his long-time Italian rival.

Napoli’s problems on the road resurfaced quickly in Lisbon, as Benfica took control from the opening whistle and carved out several early chances. A rapid counter-attack put Fredrik Aursnes through on goal, but Vanja Milinković-Savić stood firm to block the Norwegian’s effort. Moments later, Franjo Ivanović bent a shot just beyond the far post. Aursnes then squandered another golden opportunity when Milinković-Savić inadvertently played the ball straight to him, only for the midfielder to drag his finish wide of an empty net.

Benfica’s pressure finally paid off shortly before the half’s midway point. A lofted delivery into the area was cushioned down by Ivanović, allowing Richard Ríos to stretch and stab the ball past the keeper for the opener.

It took until the 30-minute mark for Napoli to offer any response. Noa Lang picked out Giovanni Di Lorenzo at the back post, but the captain could only steer his header wide. Benfica continued to look the more dangerous side as halftime approached, with Nicolás Otamendi lashing a volley well off target from inside the box.

Unimpressed with his side’s first-half display, Conte introduced Leonardo Spinazzola and Matteo Politano at the break. Yet the adjustments did little to shift momentum, and Benfica doubled their advantage within five minutes of the restart. After Alessandro Buongiorno’s header from a corner was gathered comfortably by Anatoliy Trubin, the goalkeeper launched a counter that evolved into a flowing team move. Ríos slid a pass toward the near post, where Leandro Barreiro produced a delightful back-heel finish to make it 2–0.

Napoli rarely threatened a comeback, finally forcing Trubin into action in the 71st minute when David Neres cut inside and fired a fierce effort that the Ukrainian keeper tipped over. Benfica nearly added a third late on, but Vangelis Pavlidis saw two attempts thwarted by Milinković-Savić.

Ultimately, Benfica closed out the match without difficulty, earning their second win of the UCL League Phase. Despite the victory, they remain one point outside the play-off positions—just behind Napoli, who sit 23rd in the standings.
